Issue 9 of Carbon Nation contains an exclusive interview
with Colin Edwin. It includes topics such as:
SC – I did notice that you don’t
play on some of the tracks on Deadwing.
CE – Well the specific reason was that I was never a plectrum player. That’s
the main reason and Steve being a guitar player it’s very natural to him. So
there were some things where he really insisted on having that sound, that
and at the time I didn’t really want to do it, and he really did it better
than me. We argued about it and basically I lost the argument! So I had to
really work on that.
SC – So overall do you prefer playing the fretless or the fretted?
CE – Well I used to try and play the fretless on everything and then I
realised that actually after a long time, especially with the way the music
has changed over the years, it didn’t really work on everything any more. It
suited the earlier stuff, the spacier sort of stuff really well, but now I
think of it as another colour, another flavour if you like and I wouldn’t
want to use it all the time.
It’s always been a bit dense sonically the band, but there’s times where it
wouldn’t really make any difference now what I play, I mean you probably
wouldn’t hear the “fretlessness” with everything else going on. You know the
range of what’s required in the band sound is, I wouldn’t say it was narrow,
but you know what I mean. It’s quite specific for the bass. I think that’s
also one of the reasons I haven’t gone crazy with effects on the bass
either.
